The issue has been determined and resolved. Server load is quickly returning to normal levels and web pages are being served in a timely manner.

We are currently investigating the cause of high server load causing intermittent timeouts in page loading.

Update: The cause of the high system load has been isolated as an individual IP addresses attacking a hosted website’s commenting system.
